Compact coco block that expands into ready-to-use coco substrate
The UGro Coco Block XL +Rhiza is made from pressed, dried coco peat (5 kg) and is suitable for many cultivation styles — indoors and outdoors. When rehydrated, it expands into a loose coco substrate that can be used in pots, beds, or soilless systems.
According to the manufacturer, adding 18 liters of water produces up to 70 liters of coco substrate. The actual final volume depends on how much you fluff and loosen the material after it has expanded.
How to use
- Place the block in a sufficiently large container (leave extra room for expansion).
- Add up to 18 liters of water gradually and allow it to soak in.
- Once fully expanded, break up the substrate, fluff it, and mix evenly.
- If needed, pre-moisten before planting and adjust your desired starter feed.
Note: Coco substrates contain very few nutrients on their own. In most cases, you’ll need a suitable nutrient solution/fertilizer designed for coco.
Features & composition
The substrate is finely granulated and contains only a small proportion of fibers. This makes it easy to portion, distribute evenly, and maintain a stable structure in the pot.
The high water-holding capacity (manufacturer claim) can reduce watering frequency without keeping the substrate permanently waterlogged. At the same time, it remains airy enough to supply roots with oxygen.
The block is additionally enriched with endo mycorrhizal fungi. These can functionally extend the root surface area and thereby support water and nutrient uptake. Effectiveness depends on growing conditions, nutrient management, and plant species.
Salt content, buffering, and environmental aspects
UGro states that it sources raw materials from coconut plantations in inland India to achieve consistently low salt levels. The material is also pre-treated (buffered) to reduce potassium and sodium content in the substrate.
The substrate is peat-free and biodegradable. After use, it can be reused or disposed of — depending on local regulations — via compost, organic waste collection, or in the garden (e.g., as a soil improver).
