Sowing and Germination

The Casuarina equisetifolia seeds can be started indoors all year round. Scatter the fine seeds onto moist seed-starting soil and cover them only thinly with substrate.

When kept evenly moist, the first seeds usually germinate after 2 to 3 weeks. Germination is generally easy and reliable. For faster results, the seeds can be pretreated by soaking them overnight in room-temperature water. This allows the seeds to absorb moisture and may help the sprout emerge more quickly.

Location and Care

Australian Pine prefers full-sun locations. In summer, it can also be placed outdoors, for example near bright house walls. As an indoor bonsai, it should be kept in a bright and warm position.

Keep the soil slightly moist at all times. Avoid both drought and waterlogging. From April to September, fertilize once a month with bonsai fertilizer. Do not fertilize during winter.

Because the plant grows strongly upward and branches only lightly, it should be pruned in good time. Once new shoots reach about 8 to 10 cm, they can be cut back to around 2 cm. After a basic crown structure has formed, new shoots can also be carefully pinched out with the fingers.
