Cedrus libani originates from Lebanon, although larger remaining natural populations are now mainly found in Turkey. As an outdoor bonsai, it stands out with its powerful appearance, evergreen foliage and strong potential for bonsai styling.

Sowing and Germination

The Cedrus libani seeds can be started indoors all year round. Before sowing, soak the seeds in room-temperature water for 1 to 2 days. Then place them in seed-starting substrate or sandy, loose soil.

Germination can vary considerably depending on conditions and usually takes 3 to 12 weeks. During this time, keep the substrate evenly moist but not wet. A bright, warm location supports successful germination.

Location and Care

Lebanon Cedar requires plenty of light, sun and warmth. A nutrient-rich, well-draining soil supports healthy growth and helps the plant develop a strong root system.

From May to September, water generously, ideally every 2 to 3 days. During the remaining months, it is sufficient to keep the soil only slightly moist. From May to September, fertilize every 3 weeks with liquid bonsai fertilizer or every 6 weeks with organic slow-release fertilizer.

During the growing season, new shoots should be pinched out regularly. Thicker shoots and branches are best pruned in winter, so resin loss at the cuts occurs during the dormant period and places less stress on the Bonsai.

Young Lebanon Cedars should be protected from frost. A bright overwintering location is recommended. Older, well-established plants may become more robust, but young bonsai in particular should be kept in a protected position during winter.
