The TROPICA Bonsai Golden Pine seeds allow you to grow the impressive Pinus ponderosa, also known as Golden Pine or Ponderosa Pine, as a bonsai or outdoor plant. Native to the Pacific region of North America, this pine species was introduced to Europe in 1827 and can reach an age of up to 500 years.

The name “Ponderosa” means “heavy” and refers to the valuable, dense wood of this pine species. The Golden Pine develops strong, attractive needles and is fully winter hardy. Its slightly twisted needle clusters usually consist of three needles and can remain on the tree for several years.

Hardy Bonsai Pine for Garden and Outdoor Cultivation

The Golden Pine bonsai seeds are ideal for growing a long-lived outdoor bonsai. The plant prefers an open to fully sunny location and is tolerant of urban climates. This makes it an excellent choice for bonsai enthusiasts looking for a resilient and characterful pine species.

In winter, old needles should be thinned out and overly dense branches removed to allow enough light to reach the plant. Regular pinching or shortening of the annual shoots helps promote a compact and well-branched bonsai shape.

Sowing and Germination

The Pinus ponderosa seeds can be started indoors all year round. For better germination, the seeds should first soak in moist sand for 5 to 10 days. They are then placed in the refrigerator or freezer for a cold period. This process is called stratification and helps break down germination-inhibiting substances.

After the cold treatment, sow the seeds about 1 cm deep in moist seed-starting soil or garden soil. Germination usually takes 6 to 14 weeks. During this time, the substrate should be kept evenly moist but not too wet.

Care

About two months after germination, the young plants can be pricked out and separated. The Golden Pine has low water requirements and should be watered moderately and regularly. Allow only the surface of the soil to dry slightly between watering.

From March to November, feed every 4 weeks with liquid bonsai fertilizer or organic slow-release fertilizer. To maintain a compact bonsai form, pinch or shorten the new annual shoots by around one third.
