Sowing and Germination

The Myrtus communis seeds can be started indoors all year round. For better germination, soak the small seeds overnight in room-temperature water.

After soaking, scatter the seeds onto moist seed-starting soil and cover them only thinly with soil. Keep the seed container warm and evenly moist. Germination usually takes 2 to 5 weeks.

Location and Care

Myrtle prefers bright and airy locations. It should never be placed directly above a heater, as dry warm air can harm the plant. From late May to October, it can also be placed outdoors.

Water evenly with low-lime water, while avoiding waterlogging. From April to November, feed every 2 to 3 weeks with liquid fertilizer. In winter, do not fertilize and water only sparingly.

For a compact bonsai shape, regularly cut new growth back to 2 to 3 leaves. Pruning should be done shortly before the base of the shoot becomes woody. To protect flowering, stop pruning from late April onward and resume only after the flowering period.
