African Wisteria is especially popular as a bonsai because of its beautiful wisteria-like flowers. The dark violet blooms appear in spring, while the glossy green leaves emerge later. Since Bolusanthus grows quickly, early pruning is recommended even at a young stage.

Bolusanthus speciosus is native to subtropical South Africa. Due to similar climatic conditions, it is also commonly found in southern Australia.

Sowing and Germination

The Bolusanthus speciosus seeds can be started indoors all year round. Before soaking, the seeds may be lightly roughened with sandpaper so water can penetrate the seed coat more easily. Then soak the seeds in water for about 24 hours.

After soaking, sow the seeds about 1 cm deep in moist seed-starting substrate. Keep a spacing of about 5 cm between the seeds. In a warm location, germination usually begins after 1 to 5 weeks.

Location and Care

African Wisteria grows best in a full-sun location. Young plants initially prefer semi-shaded spots before gradually adapting to stronger sunlight. The warmer the location, the more vigorous the plant’s growth.

Keep the small tree evenly watered. Occasional misting of the leaves is beneficial. From March to November, feed every 4 weeks with liquid bonsai fertilizer. Slow-release fertilizer should only be used on older trees.

Pruning should ideally begin after flowering. Allow 4 to 5 pairs of leaves to grow, then cut back to 2 to 3 pairs of leaves. Younger plants can be pruned continuously, as they do not yet form flowers.
