For friends of spicy habaneros and unusual colours, the Habanero Chocolate is a super choice. With a heat of around 400000 Scoville and the chocolate-brown fruits, it is an ornament for every balcony or sunny windowsill. If you try it raw or in cooking, be warned: the effect is sometimes a little delayed, so you should not "top up" immediately. This chilli, which comes from Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, produces lots of flowers and its numerous fruits with their fruity and lemony aroma are perfect for making marinades and spicy salsas. If you like to cook Caribbean or Mexican food, a few pods of Habanero Chocolate won't hurt. Because of their unusual colouring, they also make great table decorations when you invite friends over for dinner - a "hot" topic of conversation is already guaranteed!

Germination and growing

To get this variety to germinate, you should provide them with an environment with a temperature between 22 and 28 °C. A heated greenhouse is ideal for this. Whether you pre-germinate the seeds in two layers of kitchen roll or let them grow directly in soil is entirely up to you. When you place the seedlings in pots, you should use a well-fertilised and airy soil and make sure that the water does not accumulate. Chilli plants need a lot of sun for their development and certain minimum temperatures for the ripening of the fruits. Place them in a suitable spot where they will get at least 6-8 hours of sun and plant them in pots rather than flower pots. This makes it easier to bring them indoors in early autumn on days with temperatures below 12 °C - so the fruits can still ripen despite the sometimes long ripening period.
