The classic for the flowering and fruiting phase

HPS lights, also called sodium vapor lights or High Pressure Sodium Lights, together with MH lights, are among the classics of indoor growing with growboxes. They obtain their light from a gas discharge in sodium vapor. To date, they are popular light sources with high luminosity and very good depth effect. In addition, NDLs are very efficient light sources - a large part of the energy consumed is converted into light that can be used by the plant (a lot of lumens per watt (lm/W)). They are also inexpensive to purchase, which is why budget-conscious growers and beginners like to use them.

Their yellow-red color spectrum makes them ideal for the flowering and fruiting stages. For the growth phase, you need to resort to another bulb with a white-blue component (e.g. MH-Fluorescent).

Sodium vapor lamps come in a variety of sizes and wattages. From 100 to 1,000 watts, you can always find the right bulb for your preferences. The base is standard E40 and fits all common reflectors and holders.

For the operation of a NDL is always a Ballast (VSG) with appropriate wattage needed, which makes the current from the line only usable for the illuminant. The life of sodium lamps varies between 15,000 and 32,000 hours. Most indoor gardeners use their bulbs for about a year before replacing them.

Tips for the correct handling of sodium vapor lamps

1. Illuminants never touch the glass with bare hands! The body fat on the skin can possibly affect the life and luminosity of the illuminant.
2. Frequent switching on and off may cause the performance of the lamp to deteriorate. However, the service life will be extended if the lamp is turned on and off (e.g., with a timer) at regular intervals.
3. Since sodium vapor lamps can cause high heat, the grower should ensure enough distance to the plants - otherwise the tips can burn
