Germination and Growing:

The seeds of this plant need temperatures between 15 and 20° to germinate. Until germination, the seeds should always be kept slightly moist, regardless of whether you pre-germinate them or germinate the seeds directly in or on potting soil. It is generally helpful to use a heated mini-greenhouse to increase the germination rate and to provide the seedlings with a favourable climate for their first growth phase. After about 1 to 2 weeks you should be able to spot the first seedlings.

Savoury Leaves and Flowers for Teas and Salads

Mexican Giant Hyssop is a prairie perennial and is naturally quite robust and easy to care for. It prefers humus-rich soil with good drainage and a rather sunny location. From July onwards, it produces many purple-red flowers that remain until October. As they are edible, you can use them as decoration for quark dishes and other desserts. The spicy leaves are particularly suitable for teas and as an addition to salads, although you should choose young leaves. This attractive plant also has a fine scent of lemon and aniseed. As the Mexican Giant Hyssop is only frost-resistant to a few degrees below zero, you should consider cultivating it in a pot or tub in regions with a harsh climate. In summer, lime aniseed is also visited by useful insects such as wild bees, so you are also doing something good for nature by cultivating it.
