Activated carbon filter: So the air becomes clean again!

When growing indoors for the first time, people often underestimate how strong some plants smell. The responsible indoor grower is prepared for this and installs an activated carbon filter to neutralize the grow box's exhaust air.

Activated carbon is a permeable fine carbon that forms a very large absorbent internal surface due to its long convoluted shape. Thus, any particles that pass through the filter remain trapped inside. Activated carbon filters are well known from air conditioners or cigarette filters. They are also widely used in any kind of filtration in industrial plants.

The activated carbon filter is placed in front of the exhaust fan. The air is drawn in through the filter, filtered and directed out through the fan. Thus, odors and dirt are cleaned and almost odorless transported to the outside.

Be sure to match your activated carbon filter to your exhaust fan

• To ensure that the activated carbon filter fits, be sure to match it to the connection diameter of your fan. The diameter of the connections of the filter and the fan should be the same, so that you can easily connect them together.
• The air flow rate of the activated carbon filter should be almost as large as that of the fan. This means that it can filter as much air as is attracted by the fan. The flow rate of the air is expressed in cubic meters per hour (m3/h) and is called volumetric flow rate
• The air flow rate of the activated carbon filter must not be too low. It should be at least a quarter of its specified capacity - otherwise it cannot filter properly.
• Care for your activated carbon filter. Make sure that the humidity in the growroom does not rise over 70 percent. Activated carbon filters do not like that. Especially at night, when the grow lamp is off, the humidity can quickly rise to 70 percent or more.

How long does an activated carbon filter Grow:

An activated carbon filter lasts on average 2-3 grow cycles.

When to change activated carbon filter Grow:

Check your exhaust air regularly for odors. When the activated carbon filter is nearing the end of its life, you can easily detect odors by holding your nose to the exhaust hose.

How often to change activated carbon filter Grow:

Every two to three grows, then the filter should be changed. Be sure to note that you do not need to change the filter during the flowering phase. A change of the activated carbon filter in the middle of the bloom is extremely annoying, because the plants are already very large.
