Legend has it that the unusual name comes from the fact that a single pod can spice up seven pots - with one million Scoville and a heat level of 10+, this may even work for sensitive palates! The 7 Pot Jonah ripens very decoratively from light green to orange to red and the fruits with their fruity aroma are well suited for spicy poultry dishes, sauces, dips and can be dried well. Dried and grated, you get a delicious chilli powder that you can use to spice up your dishes until the next harvest.
Germination and cultivation
To get this variety to germinate, you should provide them with an environment with a temperature between 24 and 30 °C. A heated greenhouse is ideal for this. Whether you pre-germinate the seeds in two layers of kitchen roll or let them grow directly in soil is entirely up to you. When you place the seedlings in pots, you should use a well-fertilised and airy soil and make sure that the water does not accumulate. Chilli plants need a lot of sun for their development and certain minimum temperatures for the ripening of the fruits. Therefore, place them in a suitable spot where they get at least 6-8 hours of sun and plant them in pots rather than flower pots. This makes it easier to bring them indoors on days with temperatures below 12 °C in early autumn - so the fruits can still ripen despite the sometimes long ripening period.
