Artificial or neutral substances are called as such
due to the fact that they do not contain any nutrients themselves, and therefore create an “artificial” or “neutral” environment for the plant.
These substrates lead the nutrient solution directly to the
plant, which is more efficient, but also more risky, as too much fertiliser can quickly damage the roots.
Although you can use (e.g. coco-based) substrates in normal plant pots with conventional watering methods to cultivate successfully, artificial substrates are often also used in hydroponic systems. Artificial substrates are also the first choice for exotic plants, which do not thrive as will in the conditions of normal soil substrates, due to their pH and nutrient values.
