Germination and Growing:

The seeds of this plant need temperatures between 20 and 25° to germinate. Until germination, the seeds should always be kept slightly moist, regardless of whether you pre-germinate them or germinate them directly in or on potting soil. It is generally helpful to use a heated mini-greenhouse to increase the germination rate and to provide the seedlings with a favourable climate for their first growth phase. After about 3 to 4 weeks you should be able to spot the first seedlings.

Ginkgo - Primeval Tree With Unusual Leaves

Ginkgo trees have been around since the time of the dinosaurs and were common around the planet during the warm period. During the following ice ages, however, they disappeared from the northern hemispheres and only survived in China. In the meantime, however, ginkgos have re-established themselves worldwide and are considered particularly resilient. Its broad, fan-shaped leaves are striking and are sometimes used to make medicinal extracts. The female and male flowers are rather inconspicuous, but the fertilisation of the seeds is particularly interesting. This is done by freely moving spermatozoids, which is not unlike the process in mammals. Young ginkgo trees should be protected from frost, but from the second year onwards they are hardy. This tree has no great demands on the soil, it likes nutrient-rich and somewhat loamy soils and a sunny to semi-shady location best. By the way, ginkgos are also often cultivated as bonsai.
