Joe's Long Cayenne Chillies are indeed "long". Individual fruits reach up to 25 cm and are therefore not only something for the kitchen, but also for the eye. The taste is reminiscent of paprika with a slightly sweet note. With a maximum heat of up to 50000 Scoville, you might not want to mix them into the salad instead of paprika - rather put them in oil or dry them for chilli powder! Because of their decorative shape, they can also be threaded onto a string and hung up in the kitchen, for example.
Germination and growing
To get this variety to germinate, you should provide them with an environment with a temperature between 22 and 28 °C. A heated greenhouse is ideal for this. Whether you pre-germinate the seeds in two layers of kitchen roll or let them grow directly in soil is entirely up to you. When you place the seedlings in pots, you should use a well-fertilised and airy soil and make sure that the water does not accumulate. Chilli plants need a lot of sun for their development and certain minimum temperatures for the ripening of the fruits. Therefore, place them in a suitable spot where they will get at least 6-8 hours of sun and plant them in pots rather than flower pots. This makes it easier to bring them indoors in early autumn on days with temperatures below 12 °C - so the fruits can still ripen despite the sometimes long ripening period.
